Where to Get Rid of Old Medications

where to get rid of old medications

You can dispose of old medication at a drug take-back location, a pharmacy, or a permanent drug disposal box:

Drug take-back locations
You can find these at local pharmacies or police stations. You can also use a prepaid drug mail-back envelope.

Pharmacies
You can hand in unwanted or out-of-date medicines to a local pharmacist. Some pharmacies, like Walgreens, have kiosks where you can drop off medication.

Permanent drug disposal boxes
These can be found at pharmacies, police departments, fire stations, hospitals, and municipal buildings.
Rite Aid

Rite Aid pharmacies offer envelopes for disposing of unused medications.

If you can’t find a take-back location, you can dispose of medication at home by:

  • Mixing it with an unappealing substance like dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds
  • Putting the mixture in a sealed plastic bag
  • Scratching out any personal information from the label
  • Putting the sealed bag in your household trash

You should never crush capsules or tablets.
